Scandinavian DVDs Available For Loan To Members

 

These DVDs all have English subtitles. The DVD inserts are not necessarily printed in the Scandinavian language spoken in the movie - some inserts are printed in English and several inserts for Swedish movies are printed in Finnish. Detailed information on individual movies is available from the Internet Movie Database website https://www.imdb.com.

Utvandrarna (The emigrants) / Nybyggarna (The new builders, released in England as "The new land") -

These two movies are each over 3 hours long, so they are on Blu-Ray disks, rather than DVDs. Together, they comprise an excellent adaptation of Vilhelm Moberg’s classic 4-book series “Utvandrarna”. “The Emigrants” is all of book 1 and two-thirds of book 2, while “The New Land” is the remainder.

Turist (Tourist - released in England as "Force Majeure") - Mostly in Swedish, some English, Norwegian and French (set in the French Alps).

Thriller - en grym film (Thriller - a cruel movie) - Beware, very X-certificate!!!

Bron/Broen (The Bridge) TV Series 3 & 4 - Swedish/Danish. Unfortunately, Series 1 & 2 are not yet available for loan.

En man som heter Ove (A man called Ove)

Körkarlen (The phantom carriage) - This is actually a silent movie (made in 1921) with atmospheric accompaniment, but is included here as it was directed by and stars Viktor Sjöström, and is considered a classic.

1864 - Mostly Danish, with some German, and a little English (A TV Drama Series in 8 episodes centred around the Second Schleswig War between Denmark and Prussia/Austria).

Barbara - Danish, with some Faroese and a little French. Love story set in the Faroe Islands.
